Population

  1. Start by making a new slide (Ctrl+M) and give it a title.
  2. Give it a title dealing with the population.
  3. Open up the Microsoft Excel program (Excel). We will use this later to make cool charts for our population information.
  4. If you are researching a state, go to Fun Facts. If you are researching a country, go to the CIA Factbook.
  5. Using the two websites above, get the population of the United States or of Texas. (This depends on what you are compring your state ot country to, either the U.S. or Texas). On Fun Facts, just click on Texas or the U.S. at the bottom. On CIA Factbook, select the United States from the drop down menu.
  6. Make the box A1 (column A, Row 1) in your Excel called U.S. Population or Texas Population.
  7. In the box below, A2, type the numerical population of the U.S. or Texas.
  8. In the box B1 type the name of your country or state and the word population.
  9. Get the population of your state or country from the websites in direction #4.
  10. Type the population in box B2.
  11. Now we are going to make a bar graph for our population comparison by highlighting the boxez that we have typed in.
  12. You can do this by left clicking and holding the curser on box B2 and dragging it to A1 and letting go. You should see all four boxes highlighted in blue.
  13. Go up to the tool bar and click on "Insert." Select "Chart." This is also known as the Chart Wizard and it is the button on your tool bar that looks like a colored bar graph.
  14. You should see a box that popped up and you are on step 1. Select "column" for the type of chart.
  15. Click "Next." You should see a sample of your graph.
  16. Click "Next" and you should see a box for the chart title.
  17. Type an appropriate title like "Population Comparison" or something like that. For category (x) type "States" or "Countries." In value (y) type "Number of People."
  18. Click "Finish" and BAAMM! You have a chart.
  19. If it has something called "Series," just delete that little part.
  20. Now you should right click on the chart itself and select "copy."
  21. Go to you PP and paste in onto the population slide by right clicking on the slide and selecting "paste."
  22. Now type the population of the U.S. or Texas and the population of the country or state you are studying onto the slide itself.
  23. Copy the website that you used and paste it onto one of the bullets in your bibliography.
  24. The following steps are optional, but they are similar to the last steps. This is aimed at 3-5. It invlolves using other population information along with the total population.
  25. If you are studying a country, use the CIA Factbook to get the percentages of ethnic groups (I suggest). If you are studying a state, use Fun Facts to get the urban and rural populations.
  26. Repeat steps 6-16, except the country people should do a pie chart instead.
  27. Give the chart a proper title and label the categories properly.
  28. Repeat steps 18-21.
  29. Fix-up your slide how you like and voila. Click "Save" on you PP. You can save the Excel spreadsheer as well if you'd like.
